But Biff also owns a casino and hotel, shakes up the Republican party and eventually becomes a powerful politician, all after obtaining seemingly endless riches, thanks to the Grey's Sports Almanac from the future. Second… he sends him so far back (or forward) in time he would immediately be killed. The visual comparisons alone are worth pointing out, right down to the terrible hair and orange tint on his skin. So the new Marty doesn’t get sent back to the past… Doc vaporizes him, closing any possible loops. It would either create a continuous loop where every time, things would change and it could eventually lead to the destruction of the time space continuum. But if Doc sends that Marty back… there is no way he would 100% recreate the events that happened. So one of two things had to happen… Doc knew what this butterfly effect would cause a change so he had to befriend Marty, convince him to come to “Lone Pine” Mall (a brilliant touch) and go back in time. By that logic… the Marty that was raised by that Lorraine and George should also be different. Because of that, his brother and sister are also successful a product of their upbringing. But when Marty returns to 1985, he finds his parents are different, successful, confident. Doc reacts, but tells Marty it should be fine. Here’s an amazing theory I once heard I wish I remember where but I whole heartedly believe it.Īt the end of the first film, Marty exclaims to Doc excitedly that his father finally stood up for himself and punched Biff. Tl dr Biff makes a decision that likely most remorseful people would and there are millions and millions of Biff Tannen's in the America who wish they had the power to go back in time and make a happier life for themselves. Therefore, does it make him EVIL that he would want to go back in time and foster a more satisfying life for himself, one where he is rich and famous and marries his high school sweetheart? We are shown that his life was absolutely depressing. The fact his grandson treats him like that leads us to believe his kid(s) treated him like that and maybe even his spouse/mate. Now go back to the "Biff is a Grouchy Old Grandpa" timeline and he literally gets **** on left and right by his own grandson. Nothing short of that would ever be enough. Even in THAT timeline his "Happiest Moment" was marrying Lorraine. Let's go to the "Biff is Rich and Successful" timeline and he literally says "Third time's a charm" in the Biff Tannen History Museum video when he marries Lorraine, which indicates he's on his third marriage, with the first two marriages being to superstars like Marilyn Monroe. I dunno about the disappearing family making him evil. He knows damned well that his life never involved marrying Lorraine.īiff in that moment knowingly and deliberately "killed" his entire family he erased them from existence - intentionally - for money. He has at least one grandchild, possibly (dare I say probably) more.

#BACK TO THE FUTURE BIFF TANNEN FULL#
Old Biff knows full well that, in his entire lifetime sixty years later, he lived a full life he ran his own small business he found a partner, possibly married, and had at least one child - possibly more. In order to convince his younger self to accept the almanac, he tells himself, "If you wanna marry that girl (Lorraine), I can make that happen." However, Old Biff's actions go beyond that. And given that explanation, we might be compelled to forgive him for simple greed because who among us wouldn't take an opportunity to redo our lives with a little extra money? Thanks to the time machine, he was given the opportunity to give his younger self the Sports Almanac and relive his life with wealth and comfort.

Old Biff in BTTF2 seemingly had lived a full and contented life. His most villainous action never seems to be addressed. We see two sidewalk chalk outlines of homicide victims in BTTF2 who are arguably indirect victims of Biff's life choices. We watch him commit attempted homicide several times throughout the first movie, and confess to one murder during the second movie. Yes, Biff Tannen is one of the all-time-favorite villains-we-love-to-hate. There's one small detail about the trilogy, specifically Back to the Future Part II that I have always felt has been glossed over, and that has to do with just how evil Biff Tannen actually is. The BTTF trilogy is so beloved, and seemingly every detail and paradox has been discussed ad nauseum.
